Newton, NC, incorporated in 1855, is the county seat of Catawba county with a 2019 population of  27,500 (13000 in 2010). The city's largest employers include: Bassett Furniture, producer of quality, custom furniture; Corning, producer of optical fiber and cable; Flowers Baking Company, large-scale baker and distributor of fresh bread, hotdog and hamburger buns; Lee Industries, an innovative upholstered furniture manufacturer; Renwood Mills, producer of Southern Biscuit flour and Tenda-Bake corn meal; Sarstedt, producer of medical, diagnostic, and laboratory supplies; Special Metal Welding Products, producer of a complete range of high-nickel alloy welding consumables; Target Distribution Center, a 1.6 million square foot facility which serves approximately 70 Target stores within a 300- to 400-mile radius; Technibilt, producer of metal shopping carts, shelving, and more.; ZF, producer of driveline and chassis technology for BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Dodge, Aston Martin, and Ford. INC Magazine has twice named the region as one of the top entrepreneurial areas in America in both traditional and high-tech industries. Newton annually hosts The Foothills Folk Art Festival and Old Soldiers Reunion and the Catawba Valley Association of Realtors Night Crawl.
